Greetings longficcers! A poll:

Hi everyone! I've been thinking about this challenge and the way it works. I know the open ended timeframe is useful for people who want all the time in the world to create the longfic of their dreams, but I've also had plenty of people say that deadlines are motivating to them. So what I've been considering is a system where people can opt in to have some number of fics completed by a certain date, and receive some sort of reward if they reach that goal.

I think it should work like this: I create a sign up post with a deadline a few months down the track - say, in December. You comment and suggest how many fics you think you can finish and post here by the date (remember that when you post fills here, they must be in the form of a bingo, or extras.) If you finish at least one fic by the deadline, you receive some reward - an extra 50 points, perhaps. If you complete as many fics as you committed to, and that's more than one, you receive a larger reward, like an extra 100 points. No penalty if you don't meet your goal, this is just supposed to encourage completing fics. Sign-ups would remain open right up to the deadline date.

I've created a poll you can complete to say whether you think this is a good idea/something that would be useful to you, or you can leave your feedback here in the comments. If there's interest, I can get a sign-up post together later this week.

A deadline is very motivating to me because I am a forever slacker. Haha, I do love this bingo though because I like writing longer pieces. :)

I chose 6 months just because that's what most other bingos have for their main challenge and it seems to work pretty well.

I'd definitely be interested in something like this because, while I like the open ended idea, I do occasionally need some pressure to work under to get things done. XD

Thanks! Yeah, I really don't want to lost the open-endedness of the challenge, but I bet there's a lot of people in the same boat.

I like the idea of having it be both ways because that means I'm not pressured to get a bingo, so I can say I did something with this card or be pressured to get one so I can compete in the next round like some other bingos, but at the same time, I like a deadline, so I don't just keep overlooking this challenge in favor of something else. :)

I love the idea of a time frame, because I tend to toss this challenge on the back burner. Even if the bingo card expires and you have to ask for a new one. Or you do decide that a challenge will run for 12 months or 18 are something like that.

Even check in posts would be nice so I know the bingo isn't going away why I am working on it. Also that way it keep the group active so new people will want to sign up and not think it's a dead community.

Or what about a challenge where you can post a square (I-3) and anyone who fills that square in that month will get extra points when they turn in a bingo fill with at square. You would have to have a post on check in day that we have to post the link, and when the fill was posted as a bingo we post the link of the fill (again) and the link of the extra points check in link. Or a banner either way.

I love the idea of check in posts, will have to look at doing that.

I'm planning a bit of a challenge to run next month, although I want to avoid hard deadlines if possible. Thanks for the ideas!

I'd suggest doing word count and/or squares instead of fics, since the goal is long fic. I could, for example, commit to doing 25000 words and 5 squares. Whether I do that over one story or five stories won't matter as long as it's done.

Oh, yes, that would be much better! Thanks for the suggestion :)

I've managed to keep steadily working on fills anyway, but this kind of bonus challenge would be cool =)

The incentive would have to be points, though. Or something with some creativity and individuality -- maybe "a soundtrack for one of your fics" or "a sketch request." Never seen a fannish banner I couldn't have just made myself, which makes it hard to get excited about them.

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards points myself, mainly because it would be much easier. I think individualised prizes would take the focus off the main challenge a bit too much. Thanks for the feedback!
